Scan2Tip Terms of Service
For staff who receive tips and venues that use Scan2Tip · Version 2026-10-11 · Last updated 11 October 2026
In short: you use Scan2Tip for your work. You appoint Scan2Tip as your agent to accept tips from guests through Paystack. Paystack splits each tip at the moment of payment: 95% is settled to your own bank account and 5% goes to Scan2Tip as its platform fee. Scan2Tip never holds your money. We review your account before your QR code goes live. You are responsible for your own tax.
1. Who we are and what these terms cover
Scan2Tip is a digital cashless tipping platform for the South African hospitality industry, operated by Scan2Tip (Pty) Ltd (registration number 2026/550067/07), Durbanville, Cape Town, South Africa (“Scan2Tip”, “we”). These terms govern Staff accounts, the accounts of waiters, bartenders, hotel and other hospitality staff who receive tips through Scan2Tip, and, in section 10, Venue accounts, the accounts of the restaurants, bars, hotels and other venues they work at. By creating an account you agree to them. Guests who tip are covered by our Guest terms & refund policy.
2. Your business relationship with Scan2Tip
You confirm that you use Scan2Tip in the course of your work and that you are entering into a business relationship with us. On those terms you appoint Scan2Tip as your limited commercial agent to:
- present a tipping page under your name to guests who scan your QR code;
- accept tips from those guests on your behalf, processed by our payment partner Paystack; and
- have Paystack split each tip at the moment of payment, settling 95% to a Paystack subaccount held in your name, which pays out to your nominated bank account, and 5% to Scan2Tip as the Platform Fee described in section 4.
Scan2Tip does not collect tips into its own account and pay them on later. This is a commercial arrangement, not employment. Scan2Tip is not your employer, and nothing here changes your relationship with the venue where you work.
3. Eligibility, verification and account review
- You must be 18 or older and legally entitled to work in South Africa.
- The bank account you link must be held in your own name.
- The information you give us must be accurate and kept up to date.
- Your QR code takes tips only once your account is approved: by your venue’s owner if you belong to a venue Scan2Tip has verified (section 9), and otherwise by Scan2Tip. We may ask you for proof of identity or confirmation that you work where you say, and we may decline or pause an account without giving a reason.
- If you change your payout bank account, your account goes back for review, by your venue or by Scan2Tip, and your QR code does not take tips until it is approved again.
- Paystack may verify your identity or bank details, as South African law requires, and may hold the first payout to a new or changed account until that verification is done.
4. Fees
Scan2Tip charges a Platform Fee of 5% of each tip, so you receive 95%. Paystack’s payment-processing charges are paid by Scan2Tip out of its 5%, not by you. There are no set-up or monthly fees. We may change the Platform Fee by giving you at least 30 days’ notice on your dashboard or by email; if you continue to use Scan2Tip after the change takes effect, the new fee applies.
5. Tips and payouts
- Tips are voluntary gratuities from guests. Scan2Tip does not guarantee any amount of tips.
- A single tip can be from R10 to R1 000. To prevent fraud we limit how many payments a QR code can take in a short period.
- Each tip is split at the moment of payment. Your 95% is settled to your bank account by Paystack under Paystack’s settlement schedule, typically within a few business days. Scan2Tip does not hold your money.
- If a payout fails because your bank details are wrong or out of date, it is your responsibility to correct them on your profile.
- If a guest’s payment is reversed, refunded or charged back, the corresponding tip may be reversed too, including from future tips.
6. What you agree to
- Use your QR code only to receive tips for genuine service you have provided.
- Have your venue’s permission to display and use your QR code at work.
- Not let anyone else use your account or QR code, and not tip yourself or arrange payments that are not genuine tips.
- Keep your login details private and tell us at once if you think your account has been compromised.
- Not use Scan2Tip for anything unlawful.
- Declare and pay any tax due on tips you receive. Scan2Tip does not withhold tax and does not give tax advice.
7. Personal information
We process your personal information under the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA), as set out in our Privacy Policy. Your full bank account number is captured by Paystack and is not stored by Scan2Tip.
8. Guests who tip
Tips are voluntary and, except where our Guest terms & refund policy or the law says otherwise, are not refundable. Payment is taken by Paystack; Scan2Tip never sees a guest’s card details.
9. Joining a venue
- You may ask to join the venue you work at using its invite link or code. Its owner or manager decides whether to approve you, and may remove you at any time.
- By asking to join, you agree that the venue’s owner and managers may see your name, your phone number, whether your QR code is live, and the number and amounts of tips you receive at that venue while you belong to it. They never see your bank details, and they cannot access, hold or move your money: your 95% is paid by Paystack straight to your own bank account.
- Guests at your venue can find you by name through the venue’s table QR code while you are approved and your QR code is live.
- If you leave a venue or are removed, your venue stops seeing your tips. If your QR code went live on the venue’s approval, it goes back to Scan2Tip for review.
- Whether you share tips with colleagues is between you and your venue. Scan2Tip does not split one person’s tips with anyone else.
10. Venue accounts
These terms also apply to anyone who creates a Venue account (“the venue”). The venue confirms that:
- the person creating the account owns or manages the venue and may act for it, and the venue details given are accurate;
- it will approve only people who actually work at the venue, and remove people who no longer do;
- it will use the tip information it sees only to run its venue, keep it confidential, and treat it as the staff member’s personal information under POPIA;
- it will not use Scan2Tip to collect payments that are not tips, and will not require staff to hand over their Scan2Tip tips except under a tip-sharing arrangement that is lawful and agreed with them; and
- it has no claim to the money paid to staff through Scan2Tip, which is paid to them directly by Paystack.
We verify every venue before its QR codes take tips, and may ask for proof that the venue exists and that you run it. Venue accounts are free. We may pause or close a Venue account, and send its staff back to Scan2Tip’s own review, if these terms are broken or we suspect fraud.
11. Suspension and ending the agreement
You may close your account at any time by contacting us. We may pause, suspend or close your account if you break these terms, if we suspect fraud, if verification fails, or if Paystack requires it. Tips already paid will still be settled to you, subject to Paystack’s processes and section 5.
12. Availability and liability
We work to keep Scan2Tip available, but provide it as-is and cannot promise it will be uninterrupted. We are not responsible for delays or failures caused by Paystack, your bank, your venue or your device. To the extent the law allows, our total liability to you is limited to the Platform Fees we earned from your tips in the three months before the event giving rise to the claim. Nothing in these terms limits any right you have under the Consumer Protection Act or other law that cannot be excluded.
13. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. The version number and date at the top will change, and we will tell you about material changes on your dashboard or by email before they take effect. Continuing to use Scan2Tip after that means you accept the updated terms.
14. Governing law and contact
These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of South Africa, and its courts have jurisdiction. Questions about these terms: support@scan2tip.net, or see our contact page.
